Getting Ready for Prep

The following outlines what you can expect once you have enrolled your child in Prep, as well as some handy information on preparing for, and being involved in your child's Prep experience.

Following Your Enrolment

Starting School information will be emailed and available online in December (Commencement Info).
You will be invited to attend two Prep Orientations, which are great opportunities for the whole family to build familiarity with the new environment.

Prep Orientations

Parents and students will be invited to an Orientation Morning in Term 4.
Another Orientation will take place the day before School commences in late January.

Parent Involvement

Townsville Grammar School has an open door policy regarding parental involvement in the early years. We warmly encourage parents to be engaged in their child’s learning environment and journey, for optimal results both academically and emotionally.

Preparing for Prep

Below is some information to help you prepare your child to start the Prep year. If at any time you have questions regarding the Prep year, feel free to contact our Head of Junior School.

Starting Prep - Tips & Suggestions

There are a number of simple ways that parents can prepare children for Prep by encouraging language development, communication skills and confidence:

Read with your child as much as possible.
Engage your child in conversation and provide them with learning opportunities in simple contexts, such as in the supermarket (identifying colours, numbers and letters).
Help your child to build a sense of age-appropriate independence and confidence through encouragement, praise and support in taking small, healthy risks.
Provide your child with opportunities for socialisation with other children of similar ages.
Provide opportunities for play, adventure and creativity wherever possible, even in the simplest of ways.
Teach your child simple manners such as hello, goodbye, please and thank you.
Ask your child questions about their day and encourage gratitude, for example – what was the best part of your day?

Create a sense of excitement!

In the lead up to starting Prep, create a sense of excitement and anticipation. Some suggestions include:

Drive past the School whenever possible and engage in conversation about the exciting time ahead.
Go shopping with your child to choose a School bag, a lunch box and other items.
Involve your child in the process of labelling their belongings.
Attend the Prep orientations so that your child is familiar with the School.
